The old dilapidated school...

Jom Jiang Village is located in Phon Sai District of Luang Prabang Province in northern Laos. Most villagers make their living from farming. The Jom Jiang School was founded in 2011. The community renovated them every year before the start of the new semester. Because of limited resources, the temporary building was poorly constructed, with wooden slats and a zinc roof. The school building is in a very bad condition. The classrooms are overcrowded with 45 students each. This is not a conducive, healthy, or safe environment for students to learn in.

The lower secondary school has 222 students aged 11 to 15 years. The school not only attracts students from Jom Jiang Village, but also from four surrounding villages. We will support Jom Jiang Secondary School with two new high quality school buildings with nine fully equipped classrooms and eight toilets. The buildings cannot have more than six classrooms, according to government regulations. Therefore we build a building with 5 and one with 4 rooms. One room will be used as a staff room. At the moment there are approximately 28 students in each class, but the classrooms can accommodate students as we expect an increasing number of students at the school. The new school buildings are designed to further emphasize the importance of education to the community and encourage children to continue and complete their education.

Number of students 222 (112 boys, 110 girls)

Number of teachers 15 (10 men, 5 women)

Number of new buildings 2 school buildings and 8 toilets

Number of classrooms 9 fully furnished classrooms

Size of buildings 224 m2 and 280 m2

Budget USD 102'675.-

Construction period December 2017 - May 2018

On the way to school. Although the school is unfortunately not yet finished because of the heavy rain, but there was a small reception like at an opening.

This is what the school looks like at the moment. If it stays dry now, the opening can take place in spring 2019.
